While the football and hockey teams pull in the crowds, another team with every bit the heart and talent, and more consistent results, is sometimes overlooked...
The Girls Track Team consistently finishes second or third in the Middlesex league, and much of that success comes from a special connection among this large but closely knit group of girls.
This spring the girls are coming off a strong, 6-3 winter season, and senior captain Jessica McCarthy thinks they have a good chance at taking first place.
“We have only 6 or 7 seniors and about 30 juniors. So we are a young team, but we are also very dedicated,” McCarthy said.
The team’s youth foretells a successful Red Devils track team for years to come. Some of the underclassmen making big strides are freshmen Alison Pflanz, Gam Dhilewayo and Kelly Colucci, but many more are set to make an impact during their time at BHS.
Unlike most teams, Girls Track has “not one star but 90,” junior captain Ashley Steadman said. The breadth of talent is what keeps the team competitive year after year.
Along with team goals, each athlete has individual goals. “Each and every one of us has set personal records that we look forward to resetting each meet,” Steadman said. “I have faith that we will set new standards for ourselves.”
